Let me just say as a former grassroots organizer and nonprofit fundraiser, thank goodness!
To survive and thrive in business you need to learn how to have real, authentic relationships.
Also, how to handle difficult conversations. (Thanks to my ex-career in politics who taught me how to have the most difficult conversations in my life).
Guess what!? Creating personal, authentic relationships is how businesses worked before social media.
In fact, a lot of money is spent on sales departments to create and maintain relationships, ask any corporate company.
And when it comes to the online world, it’s called SOCIAL media for a reason – to be social.
It’s not just posting highlight reels to show how “perfect” we are.
Creating personal, authentic relationships has been the basis of my whole career. As a former nonprofit fundraiser and grassroots organizer, I learned how to listen and involve others in conversations.
I didn’t learn how to “convert,” I learned how to listen to my donors so that we can raise over $1.1 million in student scholarships from creating genuine relationships over lunch and coffee.
I didn’t learn how to create a following, I learned how to organize and recruit 557 volunteers in 6 months from phone calls and door knocking.
How has building personal, authentic relationships helped my own business?
You’ve seen it — I have events, clients excited to work with me who I even meet in person, and paid speaking opportunities that continue to come to me cause I focus on relationship building.
More importantly, my clients are getting similar results. Being featured in tv shows, big stages, and getting clients.
I just got off the phone today with a client who is a coach for dog trainer, she sold out in her group programs till September of this year!!! She’s not even using social media, it’s all referrals — ALL RELATIONSHIP BUILDING!

I build relationships with clients that some of them have stayed with me for over a year, and others have continued to provide referrals.
In fact, referrals and renewals is my top generator in my business because of the relationships I have created in my business.

How you handle those difficult conversations is a part of your brand. I have been able to manage difficult conversations with grace and ease where both parties are always in mutual understanding. Because when it comes to conflict, it is not about who is right or wrong

I didn’t just learn relationships were everything. I was a former grassroots organizer and nonprofit fundraiser. I knew how to create relationships before social media became a thing.
As a former grassroots organizer, I did 300+ calls per day, 7 days a week and only getting paid $500 per month. Within six months, I recruited and managed 557 volunteers.
As a former nonprofit fundraiser, I met with donors and raised over $1.1 million dollars in student scholarships helping 200+ students.
What’s interesting is that I work with a lot of women who come from Corporate and get frustrated with the lack of connection in the online world. When they meet with me, they feel relieved that they can really connect with others.

It was one month before I graduated from my Masters. I was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I started thinking about my great grandfather. He left my grandma when she was two, and his wife to move to America to be a grapevine worker.
He never saw them again, but had to move to America for a better life for his family. He sent money back to his family. Eventually my grandmother and father moved to America. All three generations had no college education and had to work in the grapevines.
Then it HIT ME. I realized all three generations — my great-grandfather, grandmother and father worked their butts off so that my brothers and I can have a luxury of choice. A luxury to live the life we want.
I cried a lot. I’ve never been in that level of self-awareness and gratitude.
As soon as I landed in Los Angeles, I called my dad and asked him where my great grand-father landed. My dad said San Francisco. I realized I just had a spiritual connection with great-grandfather.
That plane ride changed my life. I realized that I have to live the life my dreams because it took three generations of sacrifice for my family to get here. To get a luxury of choice.
Now, I am helping empower and transform fellow first generation millennial women to get their dream career and salary.
